Ever seen one of these on a railway bridge, and wondered why there was a narrower track inside the standard gauge track?
Funny story. The "Jordan Rail" was invented in Canada, by Oswald F. Jordan. If a train derails over a river, the inner rail catches the wheel flanges, preventing a deadly plunge.
