I knew about Tanenbaum as I had courses on networking and his books were pretty much common reference (and I liked the cover drawings).
Then I found out about microkernels. It was hindsight from 2004, so things already played out one way and not the other. Felt like an overcomplicated approach that would only made adoption harder.
