What music format do you prefer?
I just did a blind test, and the winner for me was reel-to-reel tape, followed by Apple Lossless.
But here’s the part that surprised me: vinyl came DEAD LAST for sound quality.
I found it pretty mid. Less brightness. Less bass. Just not as much life coming through.
I actually preferred cassette to vinyl, although I think cassette could have done better with higher quality tape and a better deck. But I get what this test was showing: ordinary consumer-grade cassette equipment. And with a setup like that, yeah, you definitely lose some of the top end.
Still, cassette beat vinyl for me.
And this test also made me feel even better about completely avoiding Spotify.
I already hate the way they fool around with the original masters, and after hearing the differences blind, I’m even less interested.
