Here’s a Blueprint for What Democrats Should Do If They Take Back the House

During a live broadcast on X late last month, Alex Jones [declared][1] that “[t]he big issue” right now is “how to stop Trump.” “I mean,” he quipped, “this is absolutely out of control.” Jones invoked the “25^{th} Amendment, impeachment, whatever needs to happen . . . to get control over the country.” Congressional Democrats should take note.
Jones, the former owner of the right-wing conspiracy outlet InfoWars, is incensed over Trump’s illegal war in Iran, which, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, could ultimately involve a draft. “They want us in a total war so they can censor and take our freedoms, nationalize everything, and push us aside with AI — total liability, immunity, and protection. This is a disaster. We are facing tyranny,” Jones said. “We’ve got to come together and transcend left and right, and we have to say no to an expanded war that will definitely destroy the economy and kill a bunch of our troops. They’re preparing a massive ground invasion. It’s all confirmed. This is going down right now.”
Jones hardly deserves applause for his comments, but his reveal is remarkable – not only because he is a longtime Trump ally who abetted his return to the White House, but because serious talk of Trump’s impeachment has been mostly “crickets,” even among Democrats. In June, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) [told][2] CNBC’s Emily Wilkins that despite his optimism that the party would take the House in November, it’s not focused on impeachment, at least “at this moment.” “We haven’t ruled anything in; we haven’t ruled anything out,” he said.

If the populace does deliver Democrats a victory in either or both chambers come November, Jeffries’s tune had better change. Trump’s approval ratings have never been lower, with 73% of U.S. adults in a new [CNN poll][4] agreeing that he hasn’t paid enough attention to the country’s most important problems. Overall, his [approval is at 33%][5]. A Democratic win would constitute a clear mandate that the American people demand accountability for the overwhelming illegality, destruction, and corruption of this administration.
Although some will argue that addressing the “affordability crisis” should be Democrats’ top priority, that would be missing the forest for the trees. Without a functioning Constitution and rule of law, legislative policy preferences become optional. Trump has established that new baseline time and again, ignoring constitutional and statutory mandates with impunity. Americans are feeling helpless and overwhelmed as a result. If voters tell Democrats to do something about the carnage, they must act on day one.
