What used to be a cheap bite to eat no longer functions like one.
Recent reporting shows that what used to be a $4–$6 fast-food meal has, in many cases, become a $10–$13 one. It is easy to treat that as just another inflation story, but the deeper shift is in what that meal used to mean in ordinary life.
