If I believe in fairies, and I appeal to them more than I do Jesus, I am a pagan, according to Christians. Also, there is no evidence of polytheistic worship because the temples didn't survive. That doesn't mean anything for how people live their lives. It would be very strange if the Christians let survive anything that would help people worship publicly. A deletion of record does not mean a deletion of activity.
