On this day in 1935, a severe dust storm (part of the Dust Bowl) struck a large section of the High Plains. This and the larger Dust Bowl event were the result of cattle overgrazing done by settlers, removing native grasses. This allowed the topsoil to dry during a drought and be easily carried by wind.

Destruction of environmental standards would allow disasters like this to occur again throughout the United States.

This event became known as Black Sunday.
