I think it is telling of the fact that they want us staring at our screens that they no longer seem to make phones with a status LED.
You have to interact with your phone more often (it seems) these days, you have to turn on the screen and see if you missed a message from someone, for instance.
And I just now realized, there's probably a wearable device out there that does the LED notification, probably with a yearly subscription model.
