I've been running Linux on old MacBooks for years, I'm surprised at this. Linux always runs great on old Macs for me. I still use a 2014 MacBook Air for browsing and terminal stuff. Currently using MX Linux.
Make sure to install mbpfan on whatever distro you choose to properly handle thermals.
