I'm afraid we've passed the point of being able to get rid of AI entirely. The hardware requirements of current models are decreasing rapidly, making edge or mobile computing increasingly viable. Perhaps we'll see the downfall of the big tech AIs (at least in terms of free usage), and with them, the world economy, which already depends entirely on them. However, I doubt this will be the end of big tech AI, since most governments are essentially lobbyists and will probably invest in these companies, considering AI to be fundamental infrastructure. With the current systems and capitalism in place, big tech will never fail. I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect we ordinary people are the only losers in this game...
