Patrick Yaroch, a supervising agent in the FBI’s counterintelligence division, is accused of embezzling nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from wallets seized as part of federal investigations.
According to court documents, he allegedly discovered private keys that allowed him to discreetly transfer the funds to his own wallets, carrying out a dozen transactions between late 2024 and early 2025.
But what surprised investigators the most was how he allegedly planned his next move. According to the investigation, Yaroch turned to ChatGPT to ask how to invest or spend that $1 million, as well as which European country to settle in. Taking into account his family situation, his budget, and his desire to purchase a vineyard spanning several hectares, the AI reportedly recommended... Portugal as the ideal destination.
Investigators also claim that he had already booked a flight to Portugal, scheduled to depart on September 3. Before his arrest, he reportedly admitted to the facts to an employee of the Department of Justice, stating that he had “made some very bad decisions regarding cryptocurrency portfolios,” and then confided to other FBI agents that he had “ruined everything.”
Patrick Yaroch was fired from the FBI on July 31 and now faces several federal charges, including transporting and receiving stolen property. If convicted, he faces significant prison sentences.
