Sweden is pretty much back to where only rich people can afford to write fiction. With the difference that 200 years ago, before professional writers, there was a reading public that wanted to buy fiction in Swedish. Today, they only want to buy simple detective novels, preferrably as audio books.

A Swedish Umberto Eco would have a really, really hard time today finding a publisher for "The Name of the Rose". The audience is gone.
