people are pressured to do well in school so they can study, then they're pressured to pursue a degree so they can qualify to do certain jobs that pay better than “unskilled” jobs, which translates to being able to live a better life
the degrees they pursue tend to be those with the best career chances, not the ones they might be passionate about
at no point are they incentivised to learn for the sake of learning or appreciate the joy of it
