my grandfather read 2 newspapers every day. We watched the nightly news each night. There were a lot of strikes and sometimes shortages but nobody seemed to feel that the world was going to hell in a hand basket. I was convinced we could change the world for the better - that there was a natural progression. Protests and marches over apartheid, Vietnam, women's rights, indigenous rights etc - it was all happening - we even held sit-ins in my suburban public school. Unions were a safeguard. People like Germaine Greer, Gary Foley, Jack Mundey were inspirational. Gough made everything seem possible.
