you need to make sure the spreadsheet knows that the data is a date, not a text field. Then you can sort on it.

What you're describing is an alphanumeric sort on a text field. It doesn't know the data are dates.

See my screenshot. These cells are formatted as Date values, so excel can show them in different formats, sort them, and use them as ranges.

You can right mouse click on individual cells, ranges, columns or rows, then select Format Cells, to set them as Dates
