I don't understand why gatekeepers fuss over "perfect" story openings. When I start reading, I don't go in thinking I'll see how the first few pages go. I mentally prepare to read the whole book, and give up after whenever I don't like it. I know they have huge slush piles and need to evaluate works quickly, but obsessing with openings gives us novels like A Heart Breaking Work of Staggering Genius, strong first chapters that meander into boredom.
