IMHO the main problem that engineers want to keep build stuff for engineers, especially when they tinker with it for free and use it themselves (although when they don't then it is even worse).

This kind of reminds me of vehicular cycling. It is the idea that the best way to treat bicycles is to equal them to cars. You just go take the lane and ride like a car would drive, same rules, no limitations. No bike lanes or any infrastructure needed. Drivers treat you like another car.

For capable cyclists it is much faster as you can go full speed while bike lanes or sidewalks don't allow that, you use car bridges, tunnels and whatever. Obvious downside is often finding yoursellf in the middle of 90 kph traffic and/or unable to switch lanes and/or it is rainy night and no one sees shit.

Still some cyclists see it as the true cycling way and ultimate freedom so everyone who wants to ride a bicycle should just suck it up, train themselves and learn to ride properly among cars. These guys sometimes do actual damage as they become activists and fight initiatives to build bike lanes and whatever. The most famous guy, John Forester, is known in the US for that nation-wide as he even wrote a book promoting all that (and torpedoing everything else so it actually affected the development of bike infrastructure).

Sounds familiar, right :)
