I have several portable CD players, but this KLIM Discover is my favourite.
First off, you can SEE the disc spin.
Most CD players hide the damn thing. But in a world where music increasingly comes out of nowhere and lives nowhere, I like seeing the physical media actually doing the work. The disc is right there, spinning its guts out.
Also: wood grain.
I grew up with wood grain TV sets, turntables, and video game consoles. So yeah, slap fake wood on some electronics and apparently I’m already halfway sold.
Then the features start getting ridiculous. One headphone jack? Fine. TWO headphone jacks? FM radio? Sure. FM transmitter too? Plays MP3s? Records to MP3?
What the hell did they cram into this thing?
It also has a demonstrably better DAC than my Sony Walkman CD player. The Sony gives me ear fatigue, which is why I stopped using it. This one sounds markedly better—as long as I stick with wired headphones.
And then there’s the killer feature: a built-in rechargeable battery.
No digging around for AA batteries. No opening the drawer and finding two dead ones staring back at me.
That alone is one hell of a quality-of-life improvement.
