I’m with you on leaving leaves where they fall — I’d do it openly if I could. But I’m in an HOA with family, so everything I do has to be hidden in the soil. That’s the extra layer I’m always navigating: how to improve ecology without triggering the “orderliness/disgust” aesthetic that HOAs enforce.
HOAs aren’t just neighbors; they’re legal ideologies built around property‑value anxiety. That’s why the drama feels structural, not personal. Most people don’t even know there are alternative governance models. I’ve been meaning to talk about that more.
So I work in two contexts:
the “it’s my yard, I can do what I want” world, and
the “everything must visually blend in” HOA world.
Same ecological goals, different tactics.
What I can get away with:
• spreading thin layers of coffee grounds (collected from cafés — they’ll usually help if you give them a simple one‑page explanation)
• drying grounds fast so they don’t go anaerobic
• breaking sticks into tiny pieces and tucking them where mowers don’t reach
• hiding a small compost pile behind a shrub
• watering stick piles to encourage fungal pathways
• making lacto cultures from yogurt to reset soil biology
• warming water slightly (120→140°F) to give microbes a “sauna with donuts” when breaking down compost
• brewing microbe teas with a fish‑tank bubbler
• collecting tiny forest samples (leaf litter, root fragments, wood crumbs) to diversify the soil food web
It’s all about subtlety: thin layers, hidden pockets, vertical sticks, nothing that reads as “mess.”
My background is biology + regenerative agriculture + soil food web science, so I’m always thinking about how deeper aerobic layers, more fungi, more carbon, or even biochar might indirectly help ants too. If improving soil also improves ant habitat, that’s a win for resilience as climate shifts.
