Agreed. Our preferential system is great Ben. 👍🏻
Firstly you MUST vote bc it's seen as being civically responsible, or in theory you get fined. So we get +/- 90% turn out and you know that the party elected is truly the choice of the ppl.

Secondly you have to rank the candidates for your electorate. We vote for parties not a prime minister so it isn't based on personality as in USA.

The results are published initially based on popular vote for all parties in the electorate. This is called first preferences or Primary Vote. You might have say 8 parties with the winner gaining say 29%

BUT THEN they take the votes for the smallest % and redistribute according to the person's 2nd ranked vote. So the results change.
That process is repeated until there is a clear winner "after preferences" with over 50% of the vote.

It's a very clear and fair system imho and far superior to FPTP. You get to see data of who ppl would like to see as winner, but also who they realistically can tolerate if their party isn't popular enough.
