At each temple you can get your scroll (掛け軸) signed or use a book (集印帳). Because this is a very popular pilgrimage route, there are special scrolls and books for it with spaces set aside for each temple. This is a lot like the more famous Shikoku 88 (四国88) route, except that people generally don't walk between the temples. Below is a picture of my family after we completed the route in 2020, mostly by driving in day trips from our home in Nishinomiya (西宮市).
