VPNs channel ALL your traffic through them, so whoever runs the VPN sees everything you do through that VPN.

I suspect many VPNs, if not most, are honeypots run by 3-letter agencies. Is the VPN takes your data international, then it likely makes it "legal" for your country to collect and store all that intranationally routed data on you. At least that's how the tyrants running the USA have written the laws for the benefit of themselves.
