iirc Seth mentioned in an ungovernable misfits podcast a few months ago that they were going to improve the privacy for their Spark implementation over time. But you're right. Currently Spark privacy is pretty damn bad from what I understand and any improvements seem quite modest over custodial. Not sure why they didn't just wait until they had some privacy improvements to release it.
