Many are children, old folks & disabled but over half have full time jobs for exploitive billionaire dirtbags like Walmart & McDonalds who are actually the corporate welfare beneficiaries of food stamps or SNAP by wages below survival rates... so workers get slave wages & get application for benefits with employment.. starving workers so Walmart heirs and their ilk can run like modern plantations where the taxpayer subsidy is spent at Walmart for profit.

May 2024 - It’s a great time in America to be a parasitic retailer. Walmart is reporting a strong first quarter this year, beating market estimates. It reported a 22 percent growth in e-commerce sales and a nearly 4 percent jump in transactions, and its first-quarter profit of $5.1 billion was triple last year’s, driven by $161.5 billion in revenue. Its stock rose on the news and hit an all-time high of $64 per share. Isn’t that nice? https://web.archive.org/web/20240520130734/https://jacobin.com/2024/05/walmart-living-wage-medicaid-snap

"Walmart’s low-wage workers cost U.S. taxpayers an estimated $6.2 billion in public assistance including food stamps, Medicaid and subsidized housing, according to a report published by Americans for Tax Fairness, a coalition of 400 national and state-level progressive groups." https://web.archive.org/web/20251010042309/https://www.worldhunger.org/report-walmart-workers-cost-taxpayers-6-2-billion-public-assistance/
