Since thermals are invisible, glider pilots take advantage of any trick to see evidence of them. Each dust devil is just the visible part of a thermal that can go much higher. So seeing dust devils is confirmation there are thermals. Circling birds is another way to see them. Or when you feel a bump up on one side, turn into it and hunt for it.
