Ooof. I could have told these scientists this! When I was a child in boarding school, we would get bedbug infestations, and would use hot boiling water to get rid of them from mattresses. The other solution was to put the mattress or the infested furniture out in the hot sun. It's slower, and not foolproof, but prevents spread to other pieces of furniture and also eventually clears the furniture.
