Humans willingly relinquish a great deal of individual freedom in order to live communally in societies. They don't shit where they feel like it, they don't, generally, resort to violence at the slightest provocation. We formulate rules that limit the personal freedom in the service of a vaguely peaceful and workable society. Always imperfectly, of course.
However, when that society doesn't reciprocate by providing a vaguely peaceful and workable society, all bets are off. 6/
