This possibly explains a lot of why a lot of Germany is staunchly conservative in a bunch of ways, along with some other countries around us in the central/eastern side of Europe. Our 19th century liberals went elsewhere.
Liberal political pressure didn't completely go away in Germany though, leading to Otto Von Bismarck setting up the very first welfare state to undermine his socialist opponents.
