It is a well worn cliché that we Brits don't like to talk about money, but I think this has made it even harder to appreciate the huge gaps in income and assets which have developed. Families with "ordinary" middle class careers will routinely end up accruing millions of pounds worth of assets, creating an enormous gulf from low income earners who don't have pennies to rub together. Very occasionally, they get a glimpse of how appalling the inequalities really are.
