Nearly six months after the Navy evacuated about 1,300 family members from Bahrain, the service is telling them they should not expect to return anytime soon according to reporting from Stars & Stripes.

The prolonged evacuation has exposed major gaps in the military's relocation system. Families report tens of thousands of dollars in unreimbursed expenses, stranded vehicles and household goods, repeated moves, and uncertainty over housing, schools and medical care.

Vice Adm. Curt Renshaw, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, acknowledged the problem directly, telling evacuees: “We literally have been making this up as we go, because nothing is conceived to go on this length of time.”

The Navy is now directing dependents to designate a new permanent duty station, generally in the U.S, where their belongings can be delivered and they can transition out of temporary safe haven status. They could potentially return if conditions improve.
