🚨 A new proposal aims to prepare Bitcoin for the threat of quantum computers.
BIP-361, still in the draft stage, plans a gradual migration to post-quantum addresses: about three years after its potential activation, it would become impossible to send new BTC to formats deemed vulnerable.
Two years later, after a total transition period of about five years, spending based solely on legacy ECDSA and Schnorr signatures would be heavily restricted.
The proposal also envisions a recovery protocol allowing certain legitimate owners to prove they controlled their funds before a quantum attack.
But this mechanism remains to be designed and might not cover all legacy wallets.
So, this is not yet an update adopted by Bitcoin, but a plan currently under debate.
