What if the dragon is something much deeper than only a fairy tale?
Even at the moment, we can say that chinese country is a dragon because they are a combination of many kingdoms, and each kingdom have their own symbol, which mostly consist of an animal as a symbol.
My hypothesis is that maybe in the past, the slay of a dragon means the fall of a united kingdom.
