This thread¹ laments the "elitist" nature of web-development when any 6 year old could crank out a page and put it on the web in the 90s when given a copy of FrontPage or HoTMetaL or whatever.
However the dot-com bubble was full of "web masters" flooding the web-dev marketplace with inaccessible pages/sites. Inaccessibility brings lawsuits and alienates users/customers.
Precise semantic markup matters when it comes to accessibility, requiring devs to cultivate skills, not just bang out things that _look_ tolerable. Not out of elitism, but because there are legal, social, and usability ramifications.
