The salient point about the emperor is that if the U.S. had not agreed to let the emperor stay in "power" in a figurehead role, and Japan had refused to surrender, then many more atomic bombs would have been dropped, at least one immediately that was about ready to go and on the way. So the end point would have been the same. It was those bombs that ended the war, though of course whether or not they should have been used at all is an utterly valid topic for discussion.
