Personally I tend to go fairly small -- on my galleries I make the larger dimension about 200px, like on https://shallowsky.com/images/hanksville2015/ But I also often have a fair number of images on a page.
On my blog I typically only have a handful of images and usually go a bit bigger, like 350-450 for the larger dimension.
But lots of people go a lot bigger than that for thumbnails; the size on your ship gallery page seems totally fine.
