I think it is theoretically possible for us to have allies working within the political system, if they are not bought or otherwise forced to bend the knee & compromise.
The biggest problem I see with "progressive reformers" in politics is when they condemn those who operate outside of the political system to create change. In that case they become agents of the system whose purpose is to hinder progress through discouraging direct action or rebellion against injustice.
