"What are you defending?" is probably a good question for any time a privileged person gets prickly about having to hear about the harm marginalized people experience.
If you feel defensive, you need to be asking why. What are you defending? Why is it important to you that certain narratives not be challenged? What do you lose by acknowledging the truth?
