I guess the Q. is what is a more 'normal' way of financing knowledge production, and no-one really has a good & defensible (in a practical sense) for that - lots of models, not least of all focussing on IPRs, but no real way to completely deal with the corrosive impact of money on media & other forms of knowlegde production - which is not to say there aren't better ways than the current settlement in the UK
