Hypothesis: basically *every* error people make in their understanding of the world at large (society, politics, large scale scientific development, war, etc. etc.) comes from a root cognitive failing of conflating the local/personal/small scale with the large scale and believing (usually completely unconsciously) that logic from the former can apply to the latter.
