Huge financial crises are a dime a dozen. The hugest is the one that occurs in one's lifetime.
If AI puts everybody out of a job, then customers won't exist. If customers don't exist, companies can't make any money. If there are no people working and no companies making money, Government has no revenue.
Farmers can still grow food, but wouldn't be able to sell it.
So, eventually govt will see the threat to itself and put on some brakes, or an alternative ecomomy will arise.
