The dealbreaker for me is, indeed, the surveillance and social credit system. Not saying we all have it right but a colleague of mine in the security and privacy research space used to live there and had an incident where he was imprisoned without cause because the government claimed he was under suspicion of being a spy. No evidence, they just didn't like that he is Christian and uses security tech.
Two sides to every story, I'm sure, but I do know I would never be able to accept the surveillance and social credit system. It's why I'm so vehemently opposed to digital ID, REAL ID, "age verification" systems, KYC laws and Big Data.
Still, I'd love to visit China sometime, as someone who loves their tea culture and appreciates their history and mythology. I just couldn't live there unless the regime changes.
