Indeed, rent was an issue prior. It was actually something that pissed off Adam Smith and other classical liberals complained about at least prior to Marx. Some of the more radical liberals even pushed for land redistribution and land reform, confiscating the big estates and breaking them up in such a way as to turn serfs into free peasants.
