In Mexico people let their dogs roam town freely, and when dogs pack up and start roaming town at night, people will throw poisoned meat at them before they start killing livestock or worse, children.
I saw a pack surround a cow at 1AM once. The blood curdling growl of the pack outside your cabin window is something else at 1AM. I shooed them off with a bright flashlight and loud noises. They probably would've killed the cow otherwise
