Yeah I know there are benefits. And maybe the one union I had dealings with was unique.
I worked at UPS for 6 years with the Teamsters. It was like trying to work with the mofia.
In my experience, the Teamsters union is simply an unnecessary and burdensome middleman that takes a cut off the top while also creating a culture of laziness and arrogance.
I believe that an individual would have been able to advocate for themselves better and more effective than the union.
Plus being an individual contributor means your contributions can be your responsibility and yours to benefit from.
The incentive structure caused by the Teamsters union distorted work ethics and work culture. It boiled down quality to be the minimum viable effort since there were no real costs involved in doing so. And I'd argue that it tended to degrade the employee themselves by reducing their ambition or desire for pride in their work.
I had alot of difficulty dealing with Teamsters and I'm also still pretty upset about the McKay's thing so take this harsh criticism with a grain of salt.
I know most people join because it seems like it's to their benefit. I don't think my opinion or experience is universal. 🫠
