I've run my own mailserver since 1995 and remember many happy years of dealing with spam then with Gmail ID-ing all of my outgoing emails as spam. What fun!
After thirty years that's all settled down, I rarely see any spam and my email just works like it should. So I recommend running your own mailserver to anyone with an abnormal tolerance of server hassles & thirty years to spare.
