I think a lot of the hatred of London is envy that it does have a functional public transport system, even outside work hours (for instance my town has a fairly decent Council run bus service with a working app and real time tracking, but its not as good during evenings and weekends, and the outer suburbs only seem to have "office/school hours" services (and this is exactly what embeds car dependency into communities)
