In America it's supposed to be innocent until proven guilty.
However, they still arrest and put people in jail, and only let them out if they pay bail money, that the courts then hold usually until the trial, unless theres a motion and everyone agrees to give it back early because they don't think they need a financial incentive to force the "innocent" person to show up to court.
Oh, now to mention the fact that it easily drags on for months and months, forcing said innocent person to follow their release conditions which can include not leaving the state, no weapons, and no alcohol, even if the "crime" they've been accused of had nothing at all to do with any of those things!
Or they get the innocence person to agree to a deal where they basically say that they are guilty at least in part without the state ever having to prove anything, but people often agree just to get them off their back, even if they don't really understand the real life consequences of taking that deal!
Yet they are supposed to be INNICENT until proven guilty! Not held in the grey zone until proven guilty or innocent.
