As Andrew Rawnsley (Observer) points out, the UK finds itself with a European-like increasingly fragmented polity (with a range of political parties all gaining support), but an electoral system that punishes exactly this sort of fragmentation.

He argues electoral pacts are the likely strategic answer (however unlikely they may seem right now);

but of course in the longer term what is *really* required is electoral reform to match the character of our politics!
