This is so challenging. The woman I helped with exactly this yesterday had eight QR code readers (she prints shipping labels for a home business) and I suspect one of them was the culprit. Many of the people I see have been hassled by their kids about being more independent w/ their devices but they try to do that and wind up falling prey to all manner of scams. Apple and Google and Microsoft ALL use deceptive patterns to get people to pay for their services.
