📈 Should your SMSF hold Bitcoin? It depends on your tolerance for volatility
Volatility is the word that comes up most when people talk about BTC and any other crypto.
Bitcoin can swing 20% in a week. Ethereum can do the same. That scares a lot of people, especially when it comes to their retirement savings.
But volatility itself isn't good or bad. It's just a characteristic of the asset. The real question is whether it fits your situation.
What volatility actually means
Your BTC holdings might be worth more tomorrow or less. They could swing up 30% and then down 40% within a month. That's just how Bitcoin and crypto behave in general. It's more volatile than shares, bonds, or property. That's a fact.
This is fine if you're not looking at it every day
Super is a long term game. If you buy Bitcoin today and forget about it for five years, a 30% drop next month doesn't matter much. You're buying and holding for retirement, not trading next week.
This becomes a problem if you panic sell
Where volatility hurts is when people see a big drop and sell everything to stop the bleeding. That locks in the loss. If you can't handle seeing your BTC balance down 50% without panicking, then BTC probably isn't right for your SMSF.
The size of your holding matters
If Bitcoin is 2% of your SMSF, volatility is just noise. You barely notice it. If Bitcoin is 50% of your fund, a 40% drop wipes out a significant chunk of your balance. That's harder to stomach.
Your age and timeline matter too
If you're retiring in two years, holding volatile crypto might mean selling during a downturn to access your money. That's risky. If you're retiring in fifteen years, you have time to wait out the volatility and benefit from the recovery.
The honest answer
BTC belongs in an SMSF if you understand volatility, can afford to ignore short term price swings, and have sized your holding appropriately. It doesn't belong if you'll panic sell when the price drops or if losing that money would hurt your retirement plans.
